What works in Cape Town

Stone and tiled floors, a great deal of light, and wind that brings sand indoors from about October. Rugs here have to take sun without fading and a vacuum more often than most, so UV-stable flat weaves do the work.

Choose by how it is made

Every rug here is filed by construction rather than by look, because the difference between a soft touch and a textured pile is something you feel before you see it — the same millimetres, and the opposite rug underfoot.

• Flatweave — no pile at all. Clears a door, sits flat under a dining chair, and the only thing we would put on a covered patio without thinking twice.
• Low Pile — three to nine millimetres. The default for a room that actually gets used.
• Textured Pile — heat-set yarn that springs back instead of flattening, and holds a carved pattern.
• Soft Touch — tufted cut pile on soft felt. Several go through a washing machine and a tumble dryer.
• Hand-Knotted — knotted by hand, one knot at a time. Wool, and in some cases silk.
• Printed — 0.8 mm, no pile, anti-slip backed. Goes where a thick rug cannot, at a fraction of the price.
