What Size Rug Do I Need? A Room-by-Room Guide for South African Homes
Share
Short on time? As a rule, bigger is almost always better. A rug should anchor the furniture in a room, not float in the middle like a postage stamp. In a living room, aim for a rug large enough to sit under at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs. In a bedroom, the rug should extend well past both sides of the bed. Below is the room-by-room detail.
The golden rule of rug sizing
Most rooms look unbalanced for one reason: the rug is too small. A rug that's too small visually shrinks the space and leaves furniture stranded. When in doubt, size up. A larger rug pulls a room together, makes it feel more expensive, and is the single easiest way to make a space look professionally styled.
Living room
You have three classic layouts, from most to least generous:
- All legs on (best): every piece of furniture sits fully on the rug. This needs a large rug but looks luxurious and cohesive.
- Front legs on (most popular): the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug while the back legs sit on the floor. This visually connects the furniture and works in most lounges.
- Floating (smallest): the rug sits in front of the sofa under the coffee table only. Use this only in very small spaces - it's the least grounding option.
For most South African living rooms, a 2x3 m rug suits the front-legs-on layout, while larger or open-plan lounges look best with 3x4 m and up.Β Browse our living room rugs β
Bedroom
The goal in a bedroom is to feel soft underfoot when you get out of bed. The rug should extend at least 50-70 cm beyond both sides and the foot of the bed so it frames it.
- Queen bed: a 2.4 x 3 m rug placed two-thirds under the bed works beautifully.
- King bed: go up to 3 x 4 m for the same balanced effect.
- Smaller rooms: two runners on either side of the bed are a smart, budget-friendly alternative.
Dining room
Here's the rule everyone forgets: the chairs must stay on the rug even when pulled out. Measure your table and add at least 60-75 cm on every side so guests don't catch a chair leg on the rug's edge.
A six-seater table usually needs a 2 x 3 m rug; an eight-seater is happier on 2.5 x 3.5 m or larger. Match the rug shape to the table - rectangular for rectangular, round for round.
Hallways and passages
For long passages, a runner is the answer. Leave roughly 10-20 cm of floor visible on each side, and keep the runner about 30 cm shorter than the hallway at each end so it looks intentional rather than wall-to-wall. See our runners β

5 rug mistakes to avoid
- Going too small. The number one error. Size up if you're between two sizes.
- Centering the rug in the room instead of under the furniture. The furniture should sit on it.
- Forgetting the dining chair rule. Chairs must stay on the rug when pulled out.
- Ignoring the doorway. Make sure doors still swing freely over the rug's pile.
- Skipping a rug pad. A pad stops slipping, protects your floor and makes the rug feel more plush.
Frequently asked questions
Should a rug be bigger than the seating area?
Yes - ideally the rug extends a little beyond your sofa and chairs so the whole seating group feels grouped together on it. A rug smaller than the seating area makes a room feel disjointed.
How much floor should show around a rug?
Leave roughly 20-45 cm of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the walls. This "frame" of floor makes the rug - and the room - look intentional.
Can I use a big rug in a small room?
Absolutely. A larger rug with a small border of visible floor actually makes a small room feel bigger, not smaller. Small rugs are what make small rooms feel cramped.
